Category learning drives cortical attentional gain to diagnostic dimensions of perceptual information
Humans and other animals develop remarkable perceptual and cognitive specializations for identifying, differentiating, and acting on classes of ecologically important signals. This expertise is flexible enough to support diverse perceptual judgments: a voice, for example, simultaneously conveys what a talker says, as well as myriad cues about her identity and state. Expert perception

Neural efficiency and decision making changes in female basketball players
This study provides novel evidence for the neural mechanisms underlying sports expertise and training-induced plasticity in female basketball players. By integrating resting-state and task-based EEG, we show that long-term sport-specific training enhances baseline neural efficiency, while targeted visual attention training significantly improves decision-making efficiency in novices.

Investigating subphenotypes of delirium using existing research dataIntroduction
Delirium is a common, transient clinical syndrome characterised by disturbance in attention and cognitive change. The syndrome has heterogenous aetiologies and clinical presentations and is often associated with adverse outcomes including acquired dementia, institutionalisation, and death. The pathophysiological mechanisms resulting in the clinical presentation of delirium remain l

Longer term neurocognitive outcomes after acquired brain injuryMost of the research on treatment approaches for acute ischemic stroke have focused on the effect of thrombolysis (IVT) and thrombectomy (EVT) on survival and functional outcomes. Little is known about the cognitive outcomes after IVT and EVT following acute ischemic stroke. The objective of this systematic review was to determine the differential cognitive and functional outcomes following thromb

Investigating the bio-detection dog: cognition, behaviour and applications to human stressNumerous roles for the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) have existed for thousands of years. The role of bio-detection, dogs discriminating between biological odours, is a recent and rapidly developing area. Research within the field has previously concentrated on dogs’ ability to detect odours associated with human disease states and health conditions. However, processes outside of disease, such a

Investigating the influence of cognitive biases and risk perception on the formation of entrepreneurial intentions
The trait approach in the entrepreneurship literature which suggest that entrepreneurs possess risk-taking behavior as a personal attribute has yielded mixed and, in many cases, contradicting results. Subsequently, many scholars, through the cognitive approach, have postulated that entrepreneurs may perceive risks as challenges through a ‘rosy lens’, while others posit that entrepreneurs may o

Investigating the relationship between diet, lifestyle and healthy brain ageingIntroduction
Dementia is a neurodegenerative condition for which there is currently no cure. Expansion of the ageing population in the 21st century means that incidence of dementia is projected to treble by the year 2050. However, up to 40% of future dementia cases could be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable factors, some of which, include physical inactivity, obesity and hypertensio

Caffeine, one of the most widely consumed nootropics, improves cognitive performance primarily by promoting wakefulness and alertness; however, these effects are generally transient. 24hr Blood Pressure Profiles and Brain HealthHigh blood pressure (BP) in midlife increases the risk of dementia, but standard clinic measurements miss BP changes throughout the day and night. This thesis examined 24-hour BP and brain health in adults without dementia. Findings showed that 24-hour BP, particularly higher average levels and greater fluctuations, were linked to poorer brain health, including poorer cognition, injury to the brai
