Chemical properties of marine sediments sampled during the Thala Valley Long Term Monitoring (TV-LTM) 2014-15 field seasonThis data set contains chemical parameters determined for marine sediment samples collected in the 2014-15 summer field season as part of the Thala Valley Long term Monitoring (TV-LTM) project. The aim of this project is to examine changes in the marine benthic ecosystem in the vicinity of Casey station following clean-up of the abandoned Thala Valley waste disposal ('tip') site in 2003-04. The ch

Toxicity of single metals and metal mixtures to Antarctic Marine CopepodsThis metadata record contains the results of two bioassays testing the response of Antarctic marine copepods to both individual and combined metals via 14 day toxicity tests. The tests were conducted during the 2012-2013 season at Davis Station, East Antarctica. Three metals (cadmium, copper and zinc) were tested singularly and in metal mixture combinations. The concentrations used in the two test

Toxicity of copper to three Macquarie Island marine gastropodsThe three gastropod species in this study were collected from the subantarctic Macquarie Island (54.6167 degrees S, 158.8500 degrees E), which is located in the Southern Ocean, just north of the Antarctic Convergence. Sea temperatures surrounding Macquarie Island are relatively stable throughout the year, with average temperatures ranging from ~4-7 degrees C (Reynolds and Banzon, 2008). Seawater s

Toxicity of copper, cadmium and zinc to Macquarie Island marine invertebratesWe investigated the toxicity of copper, zinc and cadmium to the following taxa: copepods Tigriopus angulatus (Lang) and Harpacticus sp. (Order Harpacticoida, Family Harpacticidae); flatworm Obrimoposthia ohlini (Bergendal) (Order Seriata, Family Procerodidae); bivalve Gaimardia trapesina (Lamarck) (Order Veneroida, Family Gaimardiidae); sea cucumber Pseudopsolus macquariensis (Dendy) (Order Dendro

A new Holocene eruptive history of Erebus volcano, Antarctica, using cosmogenic 3He and 36Cl exposure agesThe ages of recent effusive eruptions on Erebus volcano, Antarctica are poorly known. Published 40Ar/39Ar ages of the 10 youngest ?post-caldera? lava flows are unreliable because of the young ages of the flows (<10 ka) and the presence of excess 40Ar. Here we use cosmogenic 3He and 36Cl to provide new ages for the 10 youngest flows and 3 older summit flows, including a newly recognized flow distin

HEAVY METAL CONTAMINATION IN LACUSTRINE SEDIMENTS OF ADMIRALTY BAY, KING GEORGE ISLANDA temporal reconstruction of heavy metals contamination in Admiralty bay, King George Island, was conduced through the analyses of sediment profiles. Ages of the layers were determined using 210Pb geochronology. Attempts had been made to examine the history of occupation and exploration of Admiralty bay based on the concentrations of the heavy metals present in the bay. Elements such as Cr, Cu, an

trace metal in Antarctic ecosystems, larsemann Hills, East AntarcticaSediments, mosses and algae, collected from lake catchments of the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica, were analyzed to establish baseline levels of trace metals (Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Sb, Pb, Se, V and Zn), and to quantify the extent of trace metal pollution in the area. Both impacted and non-impacted sites were included in the study. Four different leaching solutions (1 M MgCl2, 1M CH3COONH4

Tropospheric aerosol at Terra Nova BayFour aerosol sampling campaigns were performed in the summer season (November to February, 93/94, 94/95, 95/96, 97/98) with a 12 h sampling time at a coastal site near to the Italian base of Terra Nova Bay. Despite the low aerosol concentrations, PIXE analysis allowed in all campaigns a principal components analysis based on elements Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca and Fe, in which three principal compon

Contamination in soils at Scott Base, AntarcticaSoil samples taken from excavated pits on traverses across New Zealand's Scott Base, Antarctica, were analysed for Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. The soils had high conductivity and pH values generally increasing with depth and in the range 8.3±10.1. The water leachate generally contained most of the extractable metals except Mn and Cd, and As. Linear relationships were observed be
