Voyage 4 of the Aurora Australis, 2018 environmental DNA samples analysed with group specific metabarcoding markersIn March 2018, 23 environmental DNA (eDNA) samples (2 L of filtered seawater) were collected between Hobart, Tasmania and subantarctic Macquarie Island. These samples were processed using six different genetic metabarcoding markers targeting different taxonomic groups within the metazoan clade: A broad cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) marker targeting all metazoans, and five different 16S mark

Fluid permeability measurements taken on vertical component of sea ice during the SIPEX II voyage of the Aurora Australis, 2012A 9 cm diameter Kovacs corer was used to drill holes partially through the ice. The core was removed, creating a pressure head in the hole. Packers made of ABS tubing wrapped with foam to create a tight seal were inserted into the holes to block the horizontal component of flow. A "Levelogger", which is a pressure transducer for monitoring well-water, created by Solinst, was then inserted into eac

Viscosity of brine samples taken from 2 MHz to 4 GHz across a range of temperatures during the SIPEX II voyage of the Aurora Australis, 2012This dataset contains data resulting from the measurement of brine samples extracted from the sea-ice during the 2012 SIPEX 2 (Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystems Experiment) marine science voyage. The Brine was collected from partially drilled holes in the ice using suction. In some of these cases the brine analysed came from holes which correspond to permeability measurements. In these cases a core n

Gross Primary Production data collected from the K-Axis voyage of the Aurora Australis, 2016Gross Primary Production Six depths were sampled per CTD station ranging from near-surface to 125 m. Sample depths were based on downward fluorescence profiles and two of six samples always included both near-surface (approximately 5-10 m) and the depth of the chlorophyll maximum where applicable. Photosynthetic rates were determined using radioactive NaH14CO3. Incubations were conducted according

Chlorophyll K-Axis Voyage V3 2015/16Size fractionated chlorophyll a data (total and less than 20 µm) analysed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Underway samples were taken using a seawater line in the oceanographic lab on RSV Aurora Australis (approx. depth 4 m). CTD samples were taken using Niskin bottles attached to a CTD rosette. Six depths were sampled per station, based on fluorescence profiles from the CTD.

Krill and zooplankton demography during K-AxisDistribution and abundance of zooplankton, krill and fish were observed on the K-axis transect using deployments of RMT1+8 net. Towing speed of the RMT1+8 were approximately 2 knots. All krill, fish and squid in the catch were sorted, identified to species and counted. The density at each station were determined from the counts per calibrated flow-meter readings attached to the net. Morphometric m

In situ Lagrangian drifting buoy data off East Antarctica for the austral spring of 2012, deployed during the SIPEX II voyage of the Aurora AustralisIn situ Lagrangian drifter positions were collected from nine expendable sea-ice buoys. Positions were collected by GPS receivers aboard each buoy and relayed via the CLS Argos satellite data system. The scientific proposal for this project was based on the deployment of two meso-scale buoy arrays over the continental shelf break in the SIPEX 2012 experimental region. Resolving of ice motion over
