PIES and altimeter derived time series in the eastern North Atlantic (47°N) and in the North Atlantic at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

The baroclinic PIES transport time series is extended to the period 1993-2017 using altimeter data. Furthermore, the correlation between altimeter and PIES derived sea surface height fluctuations is studied using data from PIES deployed at the 47/48°N transect and parallel to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

In our analysis, we use the presented data as well as data published in Roessler et al. (2015) and Rhein et al. (2019). We find a mean PIES derived meridional northward transport of 12.2 Sv in 2016-2017 and a mean altimeter derived meridional northward transport of 9.1 Sv in 1993-2017. Additionally, we find a significant positive decadal trend in the northward transport of 2.0 Sv ± 1.5 Sv (eastern boundary current not included).
