The Southern Charities Project set out to establish the meaning and role of charitable work in the antebellum Southern United States.

Description

As a by-product of this the numbers and locations of charitable societies were placed in a website for easy reference. Before this research the number of southern charitable societies was thought to be small, and concentrated in places such as Charleston and New Orleans.

This dataset established that charities existed throughout the south, even in small communities.
