Multidisciplinary Data Fusion for THz Ray-Tracing

Listed in TUDOdata

Human presence can significantly affect technical systems, particularly in applications such as human-robot interaction, gesture detection, and wireless propagation analysis.

Description

To account for realistic human motion in simulation environments, this study combines a human digital twin with inertial measurement unit (IMU) data and THz ray-tracing simulations. A 3D human model is animated by transferring measured joint rotations and translations to the corresponding body segments using a self-written data-fusion script.

The approach is applied to indoor THz ray-tracing simulations at 300 GHz to investigate the impact of different human gaits and movement velocities on wireless propagation. By comparing idealized animations with sensor-based digital twin movements, the study highlights the importance of recording individual human postures, since even small variations in body motion can strongly influence line-of-sight conditions and system coverage.

The accompanying datasets contain joint-angle information recorded with IMUs for six different walking gaits: ordinary-paced walking, running-paced walking, walking with a book, walking while using a phone, stick-assisted walking, and pushing a wheelchair. These motion data are used to animate the human digital twin in the ray-tracing environment. In addition, the datasets include simulation results for an office scenario, showing how body posture and gait-dependent movements affect line-of-sight probability and coverage at 300 GHz.

In this study, the described human digital twin and IMU-based motion data were used in 300 GHz THz ray-tracing simulations to evaluate wireless propagation in an indoor office scenario. The resulting simulation outputs include the received power in dBm and the line-of-sight probability in %, which quantify the impact of gait-dependent human motion on system coverage and link conditions.
