<p dir="ltr">Wastewater-based Epidemiology (WBE) involves the chemical analysis of raw pooled wastewater for specific excreted biomarkers of interest to gain information on the habits/health of a population.
Description
WBE can provide real-time information on public health, without invasive testing, while protecting the privacy of individuals.<br><br>This research aims to quantify three health biomarkers, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA: prostate health), C-reactive Protein (CRP: non-specific body inflammation) and Kallikrein-6 (KLK6: cancer & neurological disorders) in wastewater.<br><br>An LC-MS/MS (Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry) method was developed and optimised, with 21 wastewater treatment plants around Aotearoa selected for this research.
All samples have been analysed and are currently being processed to determine daily loads per capita (µg/person/day).<br><br>This work represents the first time PSA and KLK6 have been analysed in wastewater globally. Results from this research will be freely available to the public, to start a kōrero in the community regarding prostate health and cancer screening. </p>
