China Drylands 1-km Monthly Groundwater Storage Anomalies Dataset (2002–2022)

Listed in figshare

This dataset provides monthly groundwater storage anomalies (GWSA) estimates at 1-km spatial resolution across China’s drylands for the period 2002–2022.

Description

The dataset was reconstructed from GRACE/GRACE-FO-derived groundwater storage anomalies using a process-informed downscaling framework that integrates climatic forcing, land-surface conditions, vegetation and soil information, topographic constraints, and anthropogenic water-use information.

Groundwater storage anomalies were first derived from GRACE/GRACE-FO terrestrial water storage anomalies by removing non-groundwater storage components, including snow water equivalent, canopy water storage, soil moisture storage, and surface water storage. The coarse-scale groundwater signal was then downscaled to 1 km at monthly resolution to better resolve spatial heterogeneity across oasis agricultural areas, ecological restoration zones, piedmont plains, mountainous regions, natural grasslands, and desert systems.

The reconstructed dataset preserves the seasonal and long-term variability of the original GRACE-derived groundwater signal and was additionally evaluated using independent groundwater monitoring records from 79 wells. It is intended to support analyses of groundwater depletion and recovery, vegetation–groundwater coupling, dryland ecohydrological change, land-system differences, and groundwater responses to climatic and human disturbances.

Users should note that the dataset is a model-based reconstruction rather than a direct 1-km groundwater observation product. Uncertainty may be greater during the 2017–2018 observational gap between the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions and in areas with limited auxiliary or in-situ groundwater information.
