Yueyang Chen: Where Does the Sudd’s Rain Come From? Tracking Water Through the Atmosphere

Some of the water that falls as rain may have previously evaporated from the land, creating a cycle of moisture between the surface and atmosphere known as moisture recycling. This process is particularly important in wetlands, where large amounts of water are transferred back to the atmosphere through evaporation.<br><br>This research investigates the Sudd Wetland, one of the world’s largest inland wetlands, to determine how much of its rainfall is linked to moisture recycled from the wetland and surrounding regions.

Using atmospheric moisture tracking and high-resolution climate data, the study traces the movement of water through the atmosphere and identifies the sources contributing to rainfall over the Sudd. The research will also explore how climate and land-use changes may alter this important water cycle, providing insights into the Sudd’s role in sustaining regional water resources.</p>
