Territorial Forces Activity Reporting System (TFARS) Files

The agency created TFARS to provide a management information system to assist in the evaluation of the combat effectiveness and operational readiness of U.S. supported South Vietnamese militia units during the Vietnamese Conflict, 1961-1975.

Description

The agency used the system to assess the progress of Vietnamization of the war and to monitor the development of the Vietnam Armed Forces. This series contains information on personnel, training, material, unit deployment, large and small unit operati ons, and enemy - initiated activities.

It includes monthly status reports on the military readiness and operations of Vietnam Armed Forces units throughout Vietnam. There is one record for each territorial force unit and for each district in the Republic of Vietnam for each month. Each record includes the identity and location of the unit; numbers of personnel authorized and available for duty; numbers of deserters for each month; date; type and hours or training; unit activity; number, type, and condition of equipment.

Each record also includes coded responses to 12 questions evaluating the readiness and effectiveness of the unit.
