Narrative features in explainer videos

In the study, two factors were manipulated: the narrative voice (i.e., first-person vs. third-person) and style of address (i.e., direct verbal and physical address vs. no direct verbal and physical address). Participants were recruited in March 2020 via an online access panel provided by respondi.

To be eligible for the study, the prospective participants needed to speak English, live in the United Kingdom, and be older than 18 years of age. Participants received approximately 1.40 EUR for participating in the study. A total of 364 participants (Mage = 54.63, SDage = 14.36, N = 362; 61.0% male, 38.7% female, 0.3% diverse) were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions; of these, 186 participants in the first-person condition and 178 in the third-person condition.
