Textile Biodegradation Testing Pathways for Landfill and End-of-Life Assessment in Canada
Listed in Borealis
The fashion and textile industry generates significant volumes of waste, with approximately 480,576 tonnes of textiles entering the Canadian waste stream annually and substantial quantities ultimately disposed of in landfill.
Description
As circular economy strategies and planned end-of-life pathways become increasingly important, understanding how different textile materials behave under disposal conditions is critical to improving waste diversion and environmental outcomes.
Biodegradation behaviour varies considerably by fibre composition, with natural and regenerated cellulose-based fibres generally demonstrating greater degradation potential under anaerobic landfill conditions than petroleum-based synthetic fibres, influencing degradation rates, methane generation, and overall environmental impacts. Despite growing interest in textile biodegradation, Canada currently lacks standardized textile-specific testing frameworks and landfill degradation protocols, while existing landfill monitoring primarily focuses on waste characterization, methane emissions, gas recovery, and national waste flows rather than the degradation behaviour of individual textile materials.

This report addresses this gap by evaluating appropriate biodegradation testing pathways for selected natural, blended, and synthetic textile materials. It reviews available biodegradation testing methods, landfill methane assessment approaches, relevant international standards, laboratory accessibility, testing timelines, costs, and alignment with Canadian and international regulatory practices. Through comparative analysis, the report identifies and recommends evidence-based testing pathways that can support consistent, fibre-specific assessment of textile biodegradation and provide a foundation for evaluating more responsible end-of-life strategies for textiles in Canada.
