Supplementary file 1_Wildfire and timber harvesting drive long-term modifications in soil properties of Southern Patagonian Nothofagus forests.pdf

Listed in figshare

Introduction
Natural forests are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, especially in soil properties.

Description

These impacts can lead to changes in ecosystem functions, affecting long-term recovery after disturbances. The objective was to determine the resilience of forest soils in temperate Patagonian forests after long-term natural recovery from human impacts (harvesting with or without wildfire).
Methods
We sampled non-impacted and impacted vegetation types through 130 plots, measuring soil physicochemical properties, nutrient concentrations, nutrient stocks, and soil cover.

We compared the different treatments using uni- and multivariate analyses. We determine resilience characteristics of the different impacted forest types and determine recovery through integrative indexes of forest structure and soil variables.
Results
Soil properties varied across the different natural environments from openlands to close unimpacted Nothofagus pumilio forests. Most of the soil characteristics studied were modified by harvesting with or without wildfire after-60-years-impacts, where the magnitude of change depends on the forest type and events.

Besides, impact type (harvesting with or without wildfire) generates negative synergies in soil properties after-60-years-impacts, e.g., harvesting followed by wildfire increases the magnitude of the changes. In this study it was possible to detect positive and negative recovery characteristics that mainly depend on the forest type, e.g., N. pumilio is more vulnerable and less resilient than N. antarctica.
Conclusion
Natural landscapes presented different soil properties from closed N. pumilio to open N. antarctica forests and grasslands.

Human impacts (e.g., harvesting with or without wildfire) significantly varied soil characteristics according to type and magnitude of these impacts. Harvesting followed by wildfire generates negative synergies, being more severe in N. pumilio forests than in N. antarctica (mixed or pure forests). Index analysis based on forest structure and soil characteristics allows us to characterize recovery related to these human impacts and allows us to design more efficient long-term monitoring to implement better adaptive management proposals.
