Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER)/HFR003: Tree Maps

HFR003: Two sites are sampled every 5-15 years: (1) 4 ha, mixed hardwoods, since 1962; (2) 0.7 ha, hemlock, since 1990.
Description
Standing trees (> 5 cm) are mapped, and species type, DBH, canopy class, and condition are recorded. Stumps, mounds, and fallen stems are also mapped.
The Harvard Forest LTER site (HFR) is primarily Eastern deciduous forest. Research topics include: long-term climate change; disturbance history and vegetation dynamics; comparison of community, population, and plant architectural responses to human and natural disturbances; forest-atmosphere trace gas fluxes; organic matter accumulation, decomposition and mineralization; element cycling, fine root dynamics and forest microbiology.
