Cassava Supplementation in Buffalo

Listed in RIN Data Repository

Cassava has been widely explored as an alternative feed resource for ruminants in tropical regions; however, its overall impact on buffalo productivity and rumen health remains variable among studies.

Description

A meta-analysis synthesized data from 19 in vivo experiments to evaluate the effects of cassava inclusion in buffalo diets on feed intake, nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation, microbial population, and animal performance.

Cassava sources were classified as by-products, foliage, and roots, while buffaloes were stratified by breed, sex, and management system. Linear mixed model analysis revealed that cassava supplementation significantly increased feed intake, crude protein intake, and nitrogen retention (p < 0.05), whereas crude protein digestibility showed no significant change. Microbial parameters, including total bacterial and fungal populations, increased significantly, suggesting improved rumen microbial activity.

Methane production tended to decrease, indicating potential environmental benefits. Overall, cassava inclusion improved nutrient utilization and rumen microbial dynamics without detrimental effects on digestibility, supporting its role as a sustainable feed ingredient for buffalo production systems.
