Low Energy Deuteron-Triton Fusion Cross Sections: A Review of Experiments and Data Evaluations

Listed in ScienceDB

This paper reviews the experimental measurements of deuteron-triton fusion reaction cross sections and the related data evaluation in the energy region of Ed < 300 keV.

Description

Historical experiments and the obtained experimental data are analyzed according to the three technical approaches: thick solid targets, thin solid targets, and gas targets. It is revealed that the thick solid target experiments exhibited significant technical flaws and yielded poor-quality data.

Thin solid target technology and foil-contained gas target technology are difficult to use for experiments in the energy range below 20~30 keV, and the experimental data of foil-contained gas target needs to be corrected to improve data quality. Before 1960, because the calorimeter technology was immature, the data quality of windowless gas target experiments were mostly poor. So far, there are only five sets of experimental data in the energy region below 20 keV, one of which was obtained using heavy-ice target technology, two using ultra-thin solid target technology, and two using windowless gas target technology.

Among these five sets of data, the data obtained from the windowless gas target experiments exhibit the highest quality, while the data from the heavy-ice target experiment and ultra-thin solid target experiments exhibit systematic deviations. This dataset presents, in chronological order, the experimental information, experiment data, and error analyses for these experiments. To convert the laboratory-frame differential cross sections to the center-of-mass-frame differential cross sections, a conversion factor must be applied.

Institute of Atomic Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1976.Under the assumption of isotropy, the experimental integral cross-section data are obtained by multiplying the center-of-mass differential cross sections by 4π. For ease of comparison, the equivalent deuteron-beam energy is also listed in the data, even when the experiment was performed using a triton beam.
