The agency compiled and used this file to identify law enforcement agencies in the United States.

It is used as the basis for the sampling frame for the series "Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics Files." The agency arranged for the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research to prepare the data and documentation for public use. This series has data from police and sheriffs' departments that are publicly funded and employ at least one full - time or part - time sworn officer with general arrest powers.

Variables include type of agency, geographic location of agency, whether the agency had the legal authority to hold a person beyond arraignment for 48 or more hours, and employment statistics such as total full - time, part - time, sworn - in, and other employees. It also contains geographic identifiers and population statistics. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
