Joint scaling of cohesive strength and CF22 fatigue parameters for accelerated fatigue cohesive-zone simulations
Listed in ZivaHub
Fatigue cohesive-zone simulations are often computationally expensive because accurate resolution of the fracture process zone requires fine interface meshes.
Description
This study presents a proof-of-concept procedure for making established static cohesive-strength scaling approaches usable in fatigue cohesive-zone simulations. In quasi-static cohesive-zone analyses, reducing cohesive strength can enlarge the cohesive process zone and permit coarser meshes with limited effect on the global response.
In fatigue, however, the same operation changes the predicted crack-growth rate. To compensate for this effect, cohesive strength was jointly scaled with the CF22 fatigue-rate parameter qi in Mode I (DCB) and Mode II (ENF) simulations. For the two canonical pure-mode cases examined, reductions in cohesive strength were paired with compensating qi values to recover the baseline Paris-regime crack-growth response.

The resulting cohesive-strength and qi relations were approximately linear over mode-dependent calibrated ranges, extending to approximately 13 % of the baseline cohesive strength in DCB and 25–30 % in ENF. Within these calibrated ranges, the enlarged process zone enabled interface mesh coarsening and reduced runtime by nearly one order of magnitude in the most aggressive cases. The proposed relations should be interpreted as proof-of-concept calibration maps for the investigated configurations, not as universal material laws.
