Molecule based magnets
Listed in ZivaHub and Deakin Research Online and DMU Figshare — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.17034/32640291.v1
Single molecule magnets (SMMs) are chemical compounds that demonstrate a phenomenon known as slow magnetic relaxation.
Description
This unusual property arises from substantial energy barriers existing between different spin states of the metal ions at the core of these molecules. The spin states refer to the orientations of the magnetic moments associated with the metal ions.

In simpler terms, SMMs possess a magnetic behaviour that is characterised by a significant delay in the relaxation of their magnetic states.
This delay is crucial for their magnetic bistability, a state where the molecules can exist in two distinct magnetic configurations. This bistability is a result of the energy barriers that hinder the easy transition between different spin states.

The presence of magnetic bistability in SMMs makes them particularly intriguing for potential applications in data storage. When utilising conventional magnetic materials, data are stored based on the orientation of magnetic moments within magnetic domains consisting of multiple magnetic moments each.

However, SMMs offer a unique advantage. Their ability to maintain two stable magnetic configurations can be exploited for storing binary information. This, coupled with the discrete nature of their magnetisation, could allow a single SMM to take the place of a magnetic domain, making them a promising candidate for advanced data storage technologies.
The slow magnetic relaxation of SMMs allows for the long-term stability of their magnetic states, providing a robust platform for information storage.

This project explores the theory and history behind these compounds, as well as discussing how SMMs can be designed, synthesised, and analysed.
