Transcriptional control of meiotic recombination by the DREAM complex [RNA-Seq]

Listed in NCBI GEO

The meiotic processes of chromosome segregation and recombination, crucial for sexual reproduction and evolution, require a specialized gene set.

Description

However, the mechanisms governing the expression of these genes remain largely elusive in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we identify the DREAM complex as a transcriptional regulator of meiotic recombination in Arabidopsis.

We find that the DREAM complex localizes to meiotic chromosomes and reducing DREAM function leads to defects in meiotic recombination causing sterility. Meiocyte-specific transcriptomics together with genome-wide analysis of DREAM-bound genes revealed recombination-associated genes, including the crossover-promoting helicase MER3, as direct targets of the DREAM complex. Bypassing DREAM regulation of MER3 partially restored recombination defects in plants with reduced DREAM activity.

Our data unravel the DREAM complex as a major regulator of meiosis. Given that reduction of the DREAM function is associated with reproductive defects in other species, such as Drosophila and mice, this function might be conserved among multicellular eukaryotes.
