Unraveling the diversity on propagation characteristics and driving factors of meteorological and groundwater drought between typical humid and arid regions: insights into the Pearl River Basin and Northwest River Basins in China

Listed in ScienceDB

This dataset is a supporting post‑processed analytical dataset for the paper Unraveling the diversity on propagation characteristics and driving factors of meteorological and groundwater drought between typical humid and arid regions: insights into the Pearl River Basin and Northwest River Basins in China.

Description

Taking the Pearl River Basin (a typical humid region) and the Northwest River Basins (a typical arid region) in China as the study areas, it covers the period from January 2003 to December 2022 with a spatial resolution of 0.25°.

The original input data are obtained from public platforms, including GRACE/GRACE‑FO terrestrial water storage products, GLDAS land surface assimilation data, the SPEI drought index, and multi‑source environmental driver datasets (meteorological, human‑activity, surface‑characteristic, and hydrogeological factors). In this study, the groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) is calculated using the water‑balance method, and the GRACE‑derived Groundwater Drought Index (GGDI) is further constructed.

Spearman’s rank correlation is employed to calculate the propagation time from meteorological drought to groundwater drought. Copula functions and Bayesian networks are adopted to obtain drought propagation probabilities and triggering thresholds. The XGBoost‑SHAP model is used to quantify the contributions of various environmental factors to the drought propagation process.

Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) is applied to reconstruct time‑series gaps during the GRACE‑GRACE‑FO mission transition, while linear interpolation is used to fill sporadic missing values. The GWSA results are validated against observed groundwater storage time‑series from China Water Resources Bulletin, and data reliability is elaborated in Sections 2.2 and 3.1 of the corresponding journal paper.
