Joy and compassion buffer against hostility following provocation? An experimental study
Listed in IISH Dataverse and ODISSEI Portal — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.34894/kqpgwb
This study tested if writing exercises about joy or compassion could make people less hostile after being provoked.
Description
Method: 148 students were split into three groups. One group wrote about joy, one about compassion, and one about a neutral topic.
Then, each participant was intentionally annoyed with impossible anagram task. Researchers measured their anger and aggressive behavior, positive and negative affects afterwards. We found: Neither the joy nor compassion writing prevent people from feeling angrier or acting more aggressively after the provocation; The joy exercise did make people feel better immediately, but only for a short time.

Once they were provoked, their good mood dropped sharply, and they felt worse than the others. Prevention focus didn't moderate the results. Conclusion: While focusing on joy can give a quick mood boost, these brief positive exercises did not protect people from becoming hostile when provoked.
In fact, the good mood from the joy exercise might have made the later anger feel even worse. More research is needed to see if different timing or longer interventions would work better.
