National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey File (NLAES)

The NLAES served several purposes. Chief among these were to measure the prevalence, incidence and other rates of drinking levels, alcohol use disorders, and their associated disabilities; to identify risk factors of alcohol use and associated disabilities; to determine the economic impact of alcohol and drug use disorders and the relati onships between alcohol and drug use disorders and other psychiatric conditions; to estimate the size, characteristics, and time trends of target populations including alcohol and drug abusers; and to obtain information on alcohol and drug treatment utilization.

This series contains information on the civilian noninstitutional population, age 18 and over, living at a fixed household address in the contiguous United States and the District of Columbia. Information includes alcohol use and drug (sedatives, tranquilizers, painkillers, stimulants, marijuana, cocaine or crack, heroin, methadone, and other drugs) use, alcohol and drug abuse and dependence, family history of alcoholism, mental illness, tobacco use, alcohol and drug-related medical conditions, and treatment of alcoholics and drug rehabilitation.
