Shared Fate Attenuates the Deontological Bias in Moral Judgments of AI: Neural and Behavioral Evidence

As AI systems are increasingly embedded in human teams, they may no longer function merely as external decision-makers but may instead share the risks and consequences faced by humans.

Yet it remains unclear whether shared fate changes moral evaluations of AI agents’ decisions. We addressed this question using a moral-dilemma task in which participants evaluated utilitarian and deontological decisions made by human or AI agents in shared-fate and non-shared-fate contexts while moral ratings and EEG activity were recorded.
Behaviorally, shared fate selectively altered evaluations of AI agents. Utilitarian decisions made by AI agents were judged more favorably in shared-fate than in non-shared-fate contexts, whereas their deontological decisions were judged less favorably. Evaluations of human agents remained relatively stable across contexts.

Neurally, shared fate modulated sustained LPP and beta-band activity during the evaluation of AI agents’ utilitarian decisions, suggesting an effect on later-stage evaluative processing. Together, these findings identify shared fate as a contextual boundary condition for the deontological bias against AI agents’ utilitarian decisions.
