Static Versus Dynamic Cupping Therapy for Trigger Points in the Calf Muscles
Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository
This dataset contains anonymized participant-level data from a randomized clinical trial comparing the effects of static and dynamic cupping therapy on latent myofascial trigger points of the calf muscles.
Description
The study included 44 participants, randomly allocated into two groups (22 participants in each group), with assessments conducted at baseline, immediately after intervention, and at 2-day follow-up. The dataset includes demographic characteristics and outcome measures including Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) at the medial gastrocnemius, lateral gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles, Weight-Bearing Lunge Test (WLT), and Vertical Jump Height (VJH).
Statistical analysis included Shapiro–Wilk, Friedman test, repeated-measures ANOVA, and Mann–Whitney U test. The findings demonstrated significant improvements in several PPT and functional outcomes following the interventions. Significant between-group differences were observed for selected PPT measures, WLT, and VJH.

The largest between-group effect size was observed for VJH (0.90), indicating a large effect. This dataset is provided to promote transparency, reproducibility, and further research on the effects of cupping therapy on pain sensitivity and functional performance.
