Canada’s Libraries and Archives Mapping and Timeline Project Data

Listed in Borealis

Description

The Canada’s Libraries and Archives Mapping and Timeline Project records were originally compiled in June 2014 in Google Sheets and exported as a TSV (tab-separated values) data file as part of the work of Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory (CWRC) staff, working out of the University of Alberta, to create a mapping and timeline application of the libraries and archives of Canada for the Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel on The Status and Future of Canada's Libraries and Archives.

The TSV data file was then converted to a JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) data file so that it could be used by the mapping and timeline application, which used the SIMILE Exhibit data publishing framework. The mapping and timeline application was incorporated into the Expert Panel’s report submission, with an appendix in the report containing background information on, and a link to, the mapping and timeline application in their report, The Future Now: Canada's Libraries, Archives, and Public Memory (Ottawa, Ontario: Royal Society of Canada; November 2014).

The mapping and timeline application displays the location of, and the year of establishment for, many of the libraries and archives of Canada; multi-branch library systems are represented by one library, so branch libraries are not represented, unless a particular branch library is located in a different community, in which case the branch library is represented. The Canadian libraries and archives source TSV data file and the converted JSON data file both contain 17 variables and 4,798 records; the 17 variables are the following: name, institution_type, group, library_type, library_sector, community, prov_code, province_territory, population, year_established, url, latitude, longitude, lat_lon, geonames_id, geonames_uri, and internal_id.

A PDF subset version (Portable Document Format; 249 pages) was created using the mapping and timeline application, consisting of just six variables to create a tabular list containing name, community, province/territory code, institution (Library or Archives), library type (Academic, Public, or Special), and year established—this subset list of 4,798 Canadian libraries and archives is sorted by province and then by community, with the libraries in a particular community appearing in alphabetical order.
