Southeast Asia Friendly Forces File (SEAFA)

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created SEAFA to collect data pertaining to friendly armed forces deployed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnamese Conflict, 1961-1975.

Description

It used the file to analyze the distribution of friendly troops, describe unit movements, and define the tactical subordination of maneuver battalions to their parent regiments, brigades, and divisions. This series contains information on the identity and location of American, South Vietnamese, and Allied manuever battalions (infantry, armored, cavalry, airborne, and air mobile) deployed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnamese Conflict, 1961-1975.

The file describes monthly data on each friendly manuever battalion including unit number, year and month, unit name, location by province and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates, branch of service, country of origin, type of unit, tactical control headquarters unit name, and station or base name. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
