Dataset for Study "Physical stimulus size primes spatially compatible hand and foot responses"

Listed in TUDOdata

This data set contains the raw data from an experiment reported in a manuscript entitled “Physical stimulus size primes spatially compatible hand and foot responses”, written by Peter Wühr and Melanie Richter.

Description

This manuscript has been submitted for publication to the Journal of Cognition. Here is the abstract from the manuscript: We investigate the impact of response modality on a compatibility effect between physical stimulus size and response location (SSARC effect).

The SSARC effect denotes the finding that participants respond faster with the left hand to a small stimulus and with a right hand to a large stimulus, relative to the reverse mappings. The main aim of this study was to test predictions of different accounts concerning effects of response modality on the SSARC effect. A sample of 58 participants responded to a small or a large stimulus (two differently sized squares) with a left or a right key.

The mapping was either compatible (small-left, large-right) or incompatible (small-right, large-left). Keys were pressed with the left or right hand in one condition, and with the left or right foot in another condition. In addition, we assessed lateralization of hands, foot, ears and eyes with a questionnaire.

Results showed SSARC effects with both response modalities, but the SSARC effect in foot responses was smaller than that in hand responses. Moreover, hand dominance correlated significantly with the size of the SSARC effects in hand responses, but not with the SSARC effect in foot responses. While the pattern of results is incompatible with polarity-correspondence and working-memory accounts of the SSARC effect, the results are compatible with a specific version of the correlations-in-experience (CORE) principle.

The complete data set consists of 56 text files. Each text file contains the raw data from one participant. Each text file contains 13 columns and 400 rows.

Each column represents a variable. Each row contains the data observed in a particular experimental trial. A detailed description of this dataset can be found in the codebook that has been stored together with the dataset.
