Comunicaciones Zoológicas Museo Nacional De Historia Natural XIII, No. 209: 1-139, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15271642 ABSTRACT: A historic review of the names applied to the species of the genus Melanophryniscus Gallardo, 1961 (Amphibia: Anura: Bufonidae).
A complete list of names applied of each species of the genus Melanophryniscus is present based on an exhaustive literature account. A new combination is proposed for Atelopus formosus GLIESH, 1925, the species of Melanophryniscus that inhabits the Atlantic coastal of the southern Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina formally known as M. dorsalis (MERTENS, 1933). New synonimy is proposed for Melanophyrniscus montevidensis: Bufo tricolor LARRAÑAGA, 2015; and we clarified the nomeclature status of Chaunus formosus TSCHUDI, 1838.

Differents populations of Melanophryniscus from Santa Fe, Argentina and the Brazilian states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo are not yet assigned to described taxa because they could be undescribed species.
