These Julian data are for NON-LEAP years. Julian dates for leap years after 28 February differ by 1 day. Duration = duration of time over which aboveground nursing occurred (minutes) Sex = 1 = Male, and Sex = 2 = Female Age of juvenile that nursed aboveground (days) = number of days since juvenile first emerged from natal nursery-burrow Communal nursing = 0 = mother nursed OWN OFFSPRING = NO nursing of alien offspring Communal nursing = 1 = mother nursed ALIEN OFFSPRING = Good case of communal nursing Submerge = 0 = mother + nursing baby did NOT submerge into burrow before end of aboveground nursing Submergence = 1 = mother + nursing baby DID submerge into burrow before nursing was probably over File name = Figs 18.1, 18.2, 18.4, 18.5, 18.6, UPDs, Communal nursing, details, 23 June 2026 I considered data from the same UPD mothers in different years to be independent.

For some analyses, I considered data from the UPD mothers and juveniles on the same day of the same year to be independent. Examples of the latter include time of day, duration, and submerge. Blank cell or period <.> means no data or missing data.

Note that this file includes MULTIPLE OBSERVATIONS from the same female in many cases. The number of cases for Mom's age, for example, is 122?, but we have data from only 120 DIFFERENT MOTHERS who nursed aboveground (Fig 18.3) of Hoogland 2026. Another OLD File name = GPDs, Comm nurse, final copy, 21 Sept 2020 Some nursing juveniles were offspring of the nursing mother, but others were offspring of a different mother = communal nursing.

Note that this file includes MULTIPLE OBSERVATIONS per year from the same mothers and the same juveniles. All date in this file are from ABOVEGROUND UPD nursings. No info on underground UPD nursings in any year But some mothers and offspring evidently continued to nurse underground after nursing began aboveground.
