Ectoparasites and endoparasites of zoonotic importance in synanthropic rodents (Rattus rattus and Mus musculus) in the agricultural system of Sucre Municipality (Bolivia: Chuquisaca)

This study assessed parasite diversity, prevalence, and age-class variations in Rattus rattus and Mus musculus captured in farming zones and in a nearby natural environment of rural district seven (municipality of Sucre, Bolivia). Field sampling carried between May to November 2023, revealed high ectoparasite prevalence, especially sucking lice (Polyplax sp.

Hoplopleura sp) and the flea Leptopsylla segnis. In addition, several endoparasites with significant zoonoctic potential, were recorded including Heterakis and Blastocystis sp. not been previously recorded in Bolivia. These results highlight just how significant these common rodents are as vectors of disease in rural environments and they point to the need for more studies, especially inside home and natural areas
