Replication data for Figs 15.16 and 15.17, UPDs, Females, Date of estrus vs dates of parturition and weaning, 21 May 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

I created this file from SYSTAT file = Utahgestlac, which I created on 18 Nov 2016.

Description

I assume that I checked the SYSTATt file TWO TIMES upon creation Date of estrus = date when female had several Underground Consortships (UCs) and >=1 Critical Underground Consortship (CUC) and >=1 Critical aboveground consortship (CAC) I created this file from SYSTAT file = Utahgestlac, which I created on 18 Nov 2016. Date of estrus = date when female had several Underground Consortships (UCs) and >=1 Critical Underground Consortship (CUC) and >=1 Critical aboveground consortship (CAC) Date of weaning = date when females almost-weaned offspring first emerged from natal burrow-entrance Date of parturition = date when female gave birth (+- one day; see text for details) Litter size = number of female's offspring at first emergence from natal burrow-entrance = number of weanlings No Nyanzol markers or eartags in this file.

One data point per female per year. I considered data from the same female in different years to be independent. I have used 1997 data from this file to plot Date of estrus vs date of parturition (Fig 15.17) and and vs date off first juvenile emergences (Fig 15.16) as evidence that our inferences of copulatory partners from underground consortships were accurate, but I observed the same patterns every year.

Fig 15.16 shows female's date of estrus vs date when female's offspring first emerged from natal nursery-burrow. Fig 15.17 shows female's date of estrus vs date female's date of parturition (giving birth). See Chapter 15 of Hoogland 2026 for discussions of estrus, underground consortships, CUCs, and CACs.

These data used for Fig 15.16 and Fig 15.17 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 20 March 2025. Dates shown here are Julian dates.

Julian date of copulation = 71 = 12 March, for example. Julian date of first emergence of juveniles from natal burrow entrance = 145 = 25 May, for example. Julian date of parturition = 84 = March 25, for example.

These Julian data are for NON-LEAP years. Julian dates for leap years after 28 February differ by 1 day. Because of spontaneous abortions, infanticides, and predations, sample sizes for dates of parturition and litter size at first emergence of juveniles were always smaller than dates of estrus across all females of all four species.
