Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The legislative by-elections of the sixth district in Taipei City and the first district in Miaoli County held in March 2009 are the first legislative by-elections after adopting the new mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) electoral system in Taiwan in 2008.

Description

These two by-elections worth close examination since the two incumbents involved scandal and bribery charge and posed challenges to the ruling KMT. The telephone interviews conducted in these two districts aimed at (1) exploring respondents’ knowledge of legislative by-election; (2) investigating the impacts of voters’ attitudes and opinions on the legislative by-election issues; (3) understanding voters’ voting choices in the 2008 legislative election; (4) studying the stability and change in voting choices as well as analyzing their determinants by comparing the 2009 by-elections with the 2008 legislative election.

Based on the TEDS principle of “process open and results sharing,” the telephone survey data and codebooks were released to the academic community immediately after their completion.
