Dataset on continuous and modulated ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation for postharvest disease control in papaya and orange fruits

Listed in REDU - Unicamp Institutional Research Data Repository

This dataset contains experimental data generated in Chapter 2 of a doctoral research project developed at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in partnership with Embrapa Meio Ambiente and Embrapa Instrumentação.

Description

The dataset comprises experimental data related to the application of continuous and modulated ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation as an alternative strategy for postharvest disease control and quality preservation in papaya ('Papaia') and orange ('Lima') fruits.

The experiments evaluated the effects of UV-C radiation under different modulation frequencies, exposure times, and radiation doses on disease development, fruit quality attributes, and enzymatic responses associated with plant defense mechanisms. The dataset includes information related to: photothermal behavior of the UV-C irradiation system under continuous and modulated emission conditions; Effects of modulation frequency and exposure time on disease severity and epidermal injury in papaya and orange fruits; physicochemical quality attributes of irradiated fruits during storage, including color, firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, and weight loss; enzymatic responses associated with induced resistance mechanisms following UV-C exposure.

The dataset is organized into five independent experiments: Experiment 1: photothermal monitoring inside the UV-C irradiation chamber under continuous and modulated radiation conditions; Experiment 2: evaluation of continuous and modulated UV-C radiation under fixed exposure time on disease severity and epidermal injury in papaya and orange fruits; Experiment 3: evaluation of combinations of modulation frequency and exposure time on postharvest disease development and fruit response; Experiment 4: evaluation of physicochemical quality attributes of papaya and orange fruits subjected to UV-C irradiation during storage; Experiment 5: evaluation of enzymatic activity associated with defense responses in papaya and orange fruits exposed to UV-C radiation during storage.

Data are provided in spreadsheet format (.xlsx) and include information on modulation frequency, exposure time, accumulated UV-C dose, storage period, disease severity, lesion development, epidermal injury, physicochemical quality parameters, and enzymatic activity measurements. These data may support studies involving postharvest disease management, optimization of UV-C treatments, induced resistance mechanisms, and the development of alternative technologies for reducing the use of synthetic fungicides in fruit production systems.
