The agency conducted the AHS for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide a current and ongoing series of information on the size and composition of the national housing inventory and to track changes that occur in the housing sector.

Description

AHS data were also used by the agency and HUD to compile reports to Congress and the public informing them on the status and condition of the housing inventory as well as the extent to which lower income families were financially burd ened by their housing, lived in substandard units or were overcrowded.

The agency produced the Current Housing Reports publications and public use data files. In addition, HUD used the national AHS sample for evaluating general trends in housing supply, costs, and affordability, for identifying where and for whom remedial federal programs may have been most needed and for analyzing homeownership patterns as part of the President's homeownership initiative. This series contains data on the nation's housing, including apartments, single-family homes, mobile homes, vacant housing units, household characteristics, income, housing and neighborhood quality, housing costs, equipment and fuels, size of housing unit, and recent movers.
