A Critical Review of Make in India as an Import Substitute

With the launch of ‘Make in India’ in Sept. 2014, the government aimed to uplift the manufacturing sector, creating more job opportunities and increasing the confidence of domestic and foreign investors.
Description
Several steps initiated by the government of India have led the country to jump to 63rd position out of 190 countries in the Ease of Doing Business Index 2020. However, India still lags behind its competitors in several factors and it has a long way to go before it can earn the title of a manufacturing hub.
The present paper tries to understand the hits and misses of the campaign and how the government can facilitate import substitution through this initiative.
