A Study of Voting Behavior and Political Democratization in Taiwan: the 1994 Election for Taipei City Mayors (Face to Face Interview)

The theoretical framework and research design of this project were largely carried over from our research project on the 1993 City Mayors and County Magistrates elections.
Description
By observing and comparing voters in different types of elections, we attempted to find the similarities and differences in political attitudes and voting behavior. The population of our this survey was defined as all eligible voters in the Taiwan area (including Taiwan Province, Taipei City, and Kaohsiung City) aged twenty and over with valid residency and ROC citizenship.
This survey adopted a stratified, three stage, systematic random sampling method. In the first stage, towns and districts were selected. The second stage sampled villages within the appropriate towns and districts.

Finally, the third stage sampled respondents. Among the three elections (Governor of Taiwan Province, Mayors of Taipei and Kaohsiung Cities), the Taipei Mayoral race was the most competitive. In order to be able to study this race more accurately, we increased the number of respondents from Taipei City beyond the proportional allotment to a minimum of 500.
Thus, respondents from Taiwan Province and Kaohsiung City were selected in accordance with the principle of probabilities proportional to size (PPS), while Taipei City was overrepresented in the sample. Altogether 1702 interviews were successfully completed.
