Public Use Sample Data Files from the 19th Census of Population and Housing

The agency prepared public use sample data files from the 1970 Census as complements to the Population or Housing Subject Report publication program.
Description
In order to protect the confidentiality of respondents, the agency excluded identifying information from the records. The files were prepared to provide users with special needs the ability to prepare virtually any tabulation of the data they might require, within the limits of sample size and geographic detail provided.
This series contain s data files with representative samples of records from the 1970 Census sample ('long form') questionnaires. The primary sample size is one-in-a-hundred, or one sample unit (household, vacant unit, or person in group quarters) for every one hundred such units in the population. For each household, information is provided about the unit itself as well as the characteristics of the persons therein.

Two long form census questionnaires were used in the 1970 Census of Population and Housing: one for a 15-percent sample, the other for a 5-percent sample of the population. Of the 1970 samples, three 1/100 samples are drawn from the 15-percent sample data, and three from the 5-percent sample data, one for each of the three options for geographic information: 1) County Groups, 2) States, and 3) Census Geographic Divisions with Neighborhood Characteristics.
Any one sample contains only one of these types of information. Twenty percent sample data for Puerto Rico for all three geographic options is also available. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
