Replication Data for: File name = Figs 16.6, 16.8, and 16.10, GPDs, Mating Calls vs variation, sexual partners, and male body mass, 27 May 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

Many notes below, most of them useful only to me.

Description

Perhaps the most important data from this file are for Fig 16.6, which shows variation among GPD males in the tendency to give a Mating Call before or after copulating with an estrous female. GPD data for Figs 16.8 and 16.10 did not show any statistical significance.

This file contains the GPD data for Figs 16.8 and 16.10, but I did not them graph them because of the lack of statistical significance. As explained below, I only use data from this file when Oktouse = 1. OLD File Name = GPDs, MCs vs ARS, et, all 3 colonies, 23 July 2022 I will use this file to compare the following variables across all 3 GPD colonies: PEFO, RMC, and VCC: (1) individual variation in percentage of cops when male GPD gave MC, (b) percentage of cops when male GPD gave MC vs male age, male body mass during mating season, the number of the male's sex partners, the number of weanlings sired, and the number of yearling sired I created this file by merging data from the following two files: File name = GPDs, MCs vs male body mass, male cops, 08 Jan 2021 [and] Name for this file = GPDs, MCs vs ARS, age body mass, VCNP only 23 July 2022 All data in these files for merging have been checked at least once, and most data were checked TWO TIMES.

See notes on these files below. OLD File name = GPDs, MCs vs male body mass, male cops, 08 Jan 2021 I derived this file from file = GPDs, MCs vs female body mass, ARS, 06 Jan 2021 File name = GPDs, MCs vs male body mass, male cops, 08 Jan 2021 has been checked TWO TIMES ON 08 Jan 2021 A GPD male will have the SAME EARTAGS in different years, but will have a different Nyanzol marker or numerical number from JLH in different years For most analyses, I will consider data from the same GPD male in different years to be statistically independent Oktouse = 1 means that we think we observed most or all copulations by a GPD male in a particular year Oktouse = 0 means that we think we DID NOT OBSERVE most or all copulations by a GPD male in a particular year I only use AGE if I was certain--or almost certain--about a GPD male's exact age Weanlings sired = all babies weaned by all females with whom a GPD male copulated.

SOME of the babies might have been sired by the copulating male, but OTHER offspring might have been sired by other males that copulated with the GPD female Yrl = prairie dog juvenile that survived for >=9 months after first emergence from the natal nursery-burrow Yearlings sired = all yearlings reared by all females with whom a GPD male copulated. SOME of the yrls might have been sired by the copulating male, but OTHER yrls might have been sired by other males that copulated with the GPD female Because of frequent polyandry and multiple paternity, the estimates for Weanlings sired and Yearlings sired in this file are dubious.

Please see Chapters 19 and 20 for more information on these issues. I do NOT use data from this file for either Weanlings sired or Yearlings sired. SEXPARTNERS = minimal number of GPD females with whom GPD male copulated, with or without MCs by the copulating male

Note

GPD male with Dognum = 63.5--so that I could insert additional data for GPD male-07 (B17, C68) in 1993. Note also that GPD male-34 and GPD male 34#2 are DIFFERENT GPD MALES, and they have different Dognums and different Eartags Year for male-6 (9, 10) changed from 1990 to 1989 for year-1989. So, years 1989 and 1990 now separate.

PercentMCs are true percents, and not proportions. I have NOT inserted the % signs though. Notes on 23 July 2022 For this file, I start with the following file: GPDs, male wts vs cop or no cop, WITH FINAL EDITS, 21 Aug 2020 I use SEXPARTNERS from this latter file to calculate percents of of MCs for GPD males.

SEXPARTNERS this file sometimes differ by a Sexpartner or two form Sexpartners in MC files More data are in computer file that are not shown in hard copy printout OLD File name = GPDs, Male offspring sired vs body mass, 29 Aug 2021 I create this file by adding information to the following: File name = GPDs, Male RS for cops, babies, yrls, 01 April 2021 See details below for File name = GPDs, Male RS for cops, babies, yrls, 01 April 2021 Marchwt = body mass just before, during, or just after the mating season Junewt = body mass at time of first juvenile emergences Marchwt and Junewt come from the following: File name = GPDs, Male wts vs cop or no cop, with final edits, 21 Aug 2020 Marchwt = GPD male body mass just before, during, or just after mating season; Junewt = GPD male body mass just before, just during, or just after period when juveniles were first emerging from their natal nursery-burrows, Marchwt and Junewt have been checked ONE TIME ONLY.

No data for Marchwt in this file. Because of no statistical significance--not even close--I will not check a second time. Source of file for Marchwt and Junewt = GPDs, male wts vs cop or no cop, WITH FINAL EDITS, 21 Aug 2020 See below, at end, for details of File name = GPDs, Male wts vs cop or no cop, WITH FINAL EDITS, As noted below, Most data in this were file checked two times at creation, but some data were checked one time only.

Data for this file for variable = PercentMCs have now been checked TWO TIMES All other data come from file = GPDs, Male wts vs cop or no cop, WITH FINAL EDITS, Date = 02 April 2021 OLD File name = GPDs, Male RS for cops, babies, yrls, 01 April 2021 I created this file from File name = GPDs, Male ARS-LRS summaries, 31 March 2021. See notes below. OKtouse = 0 = we did not see many of the copulations--probably <50% OKtouse = 1 = we documented most of the copulations--probably > 50% I checked all the data on Age and Sexpartners on the hard-copy summary sheets ONE TIME ONLY--- I found only 1 error, so I did not check a second time This file has been checked TWO TIMES on 02 April 2021 In particular, I checked the new data for Sexpartners, OK to use, and Age on 02 April 2021 PercentMCs = percent of GPD male's sexual partners for whom the male gave at least one MC For GPDs from VCC of VCNP, I use a suffix of "V" for every GPD marker and eartag-- to reduce possible confusion with GPDS from RMC of VCNP All data in this file are from GPD males that copulated with >=1 female All data from males that were not observed to copulate are EXCLUDED from this file For several males listed in this file that copulated with >=1 female, we have NO EVIDENCE FROM MICROSATS that those males sired >=1 emergent juvenile.

Copulating males that evidently did not sire any offspring include the following: Micro sat = Microsaellite For 2013: 28 (123) For 2014: 108 (C47), 25 (439), 32 (593) For 2015: 20#2 (815), 107 (C39) For 2016: 37#2 (C99) For 2017: 24 (203) For 2018: 32 (79), 6 (395). 14 (55), 47 (435), 17 (O235) Date = 31 March 2021 This new file checked TWO TIMES for Babies and Yearlings on 31 March-02 April 2021 Weanlings = cumulative number of babies sired by each male per year Yearlings = cumulative number of yearlings by each male per year Yearling = weanling that survived for >=9 months after first emergence from natal burrow-entrance.

File name = GPDs, Male ARS-LRS summaries, 31 March 2021 I made this file directly from file = GPDs, Male ARS-LRS for cops, babies, yrls, 30 March 2021 Details immediately below for GPDs, Male ARS-LRS for cops, babies, yrls, 30 March 2021 Name of file = GPDs, Male ARS-LRS for cops, babies, yrls, 30 March 2021 No information on survivorship of juveniles for 2016 (last year at VCNP's RMC) or 2018 (last year at VCNP's VCC) Number in parenthesis after number of babies or yearlings for a male = number of babies or yearlings ESTIMATED or INFERRED.

I only made estimates or inferences that seemed reasonable. For example, if microsats showed that the single male that copulated with the mother sired 2 of 3 babies, I inferred paternity to that male for the third baby as well. Similarly, if microsats showed for a litter of 6 that one of two copulating males sired 2 babies and that the other of two copulating ales sired 2 babies, then I inferred paternity for 3 babies for both males.

If a female copulated with 2 males, for example, and 1 of the copulating males sired three of four babies and we have NO INFORMATION from microsats for the fourth babies, then I inferred that the male that sired three of the babies (from microsats) also sired the fourth baby as well. I only made this inference if the one male sired AT LEAST HALF of babies. So, if a female copulated with two males and weaned five babies, for example, and if one of the copulating males sired two babies and we have NO INFORMATION from microsats for the other three babies, I have NOT inferred paternities for any of those 3 babies.

For this file I have made no attempt to include information for body mass or age of the copulating males. Information on age and body mass vs male ARS and LRS is summarized in other chapters. This file has been checked TWO TIMES on 29-30 March 2021.

I have excluded some cases for which paternity makes no sense. PEFO ID does not always equal an integer--e.g., 15.5, 33.2, 58.5--means that GPD was added after I created an earlier, numbered file. All data in this EXCEL file are from sexually mature males that copulated with at least one female.

File name = GPDs, Male wts vs cop or no cop, PEFO and VCNP, 20 Aug 2020 See note below. I started this file from other file. All data from this file checked on either 05 Aug 2020 (cases 1-472; see note below) or 20 Aug 2020 (cases 473-1141).

Data in this file checked ONE TIME ONLY by JLH. But many data checked TWO TIMES. Note for cases 1-472 from 05 August 2020 Date = 05 Aug 2020.

For PEFO males that sired >=1 baby, I checked for a body mass during the mating season and at 1st juvnenile emergences in the following two places: the eartag summary sheets, and the marking summary sheets. For "Marchwt" I have used the FIRST (EARLIEST) WEIGHT taken in March until about 15 April = body mass during mating season For "Junwt" I have used the LAST (LATEST) WEIGHT taken a just before first juvenile emergences through about 15 July No Junwts are shown in this GPD Excel file Asterisk (*) means that male is INVADER or is not in list of clan compositions.

Invader = 0 means male was resident of study-colony. Invader = 1 means male was non-resident/invader. During week of 07 August 2020, all data in this file checked one time by JLH alone.

MOST DATA CHECKED TWO TIMES. FOR MALES FOR WHICH I HAVE NO INFORMATION ON COPS, I have many weights during the mating season or at 1st juvenile emergences. SOME of these latter data are in this EXCEL file, but many are not.

Some un-entered data are one of the HARD COPIES of this file. Note that this file contains GPD data from 3 colonies: PEFO in 1989-1995; RMC in 2013-2016; and VCC in 2017-2018. File name = GPDs, male wts vs cops, PEFO and VCNP, 15 Aug 2020 The second half of this file is to compare GPD male body mass for GPD COPPING MALES vs GPD NONCOPPING MALES I will create a second file where I will ELIMINATE THE DUPLICATE CASES EARLY File name = GPDs, Male wts vs cop or no cop, PEFO and VCNP, 20 Aug 2020; See last line for FINAL FILE NAME See note below.

I started this file from other file named All data from this file checked on either 05 Aug 2020 (cases 1-225; see note below) or 20 Aug 2020 (cases 335-999). Data in this file checked ONE TIME ONLY by JLH. But many data checked TWO TIMES.

In this file, Number of MCs = number of sexual partners for which male gave at least one MC, and PercentMCs - the number of sexual partners for which male gave at least one MC divided by the number of sexual partners. Date = 05 Aug 2020. For PEFO males that sired >=1 baby, checked for a body mass during the mating season and at 1st juvnenile emergences in the following two places: the eartag summary sheets, and the marking summary sheets.

For "Marchwt" I have used the FIRST (EARLIEST) WEIGHT taken in March until about 15 April For "Junwt" I have used the LAST (LATEST) WEIGHT taken a just before first juvenile emergences through about 15 July Asterisk (*) means that male is INVADER or is not in list of clan compositions.

File name = GPDs, male wts vs cops, PEFO and VCNP, 15 Aug 2020 The second half of this file is to compare GPD male body mass for GPD COPPING MALES vs GPD NONCOPPING MALES I need BOTH HALVES of the file to compare body mass of GPD copping males vs body mass of noncopping GPD males In this file, with edits, I have DELETED the critical data for second-half males that are included in first-half males For the latter males, I have included "See first half" under Comment1

Note

I have deleted cases in first part of file for which Maxcops = 0 or Maxcops = . or Maxcops = [blank, for no data]. In all these cases, Repro now = 1 This change makes for easier checking of file. This is the file I will use to compare body mass for (a) GPD males that did copulate vs (b) GPD males that did not copulate Note that I have body masses for Marchwt = body mass taken <= 15 April (with a few exceptions) and Junewt = body mass taken >= 15 May File name for this analysis = GPDs, male wts vs cop or no cop, WITH FINAL EDITS, 21 Aug 2020

Note

Most data in this file checked two times; but some checked only one time MC = Mating Call, defined in Chapter 16. GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP.

GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. PEFO ID = convenient number to identify GPDs at PEFO. It has no connection to either eartags or Nyanzol marker.

NOTE WELL. This file contains GPD data that are relevant to Figs 16.6, 16.8, and 16.8. I use these GPD for Fig 16.6, which shows individual variation in the tendency to give an alarm call.

I do NOT use these GPD data for Figs 16.8 and 16.10, because GPDs did not show any statistically significant trends for GPD mating call vs either the number of the male's sexual partners (Fig 16.8) or GPD male body mass (Fig 16.10). I use GPD data from this file for Fig 16.6 only--NOT for Figs 16.8 and 16.10. File name = Figs 16.6, 16.8, and 16.10, GPDs, Mating Calls vs variation, sexual partners and male body mass, 27 May 2026
