Portable Device-Centric Human Postures for Modeling Reliable THz Channels

Listed in TUDOdata

Human blockage is a critical factor for indoor THz communication systems, since the human body is largely non-transparent to electromagnetic waves and can strongly affect the propagation channel between transmitter and receiver.

Description

This study investigates how realistic sitting postures and posture-related body variations influence 300 GHz in-room wireless links, particularly with respect to blockage, reflected propagation paths, and the resulting channel capacity.

A digital human twin combined with IMU-based motion data is used to represent realistic body configurations in THz ray-tracing simulations. The dataset provides IMU-derived joint-angle information that was used to reconstruct a seated reference posture representing a healthy sitting position. Based on this reference posture, additional posture variations were generated in postprocessing to emulate less ergonomic sitting configurations, such as those commonly observed when using a smartphone or tablet.

Specifically, the neck, trunk, and forearm angles were varied in steps of 10° up to a maximum deviation of 30° from the respective reference values. These posture variations were then incorporated into 300 GHz ray-tracing simulations, considering blockage effects and reflections up to the third order. The dataset therefore contains posture-dependent simulation results that show how changes in sitting posture affect line-of-sight conditions, reflected propagation contributions, and the resulting fluctuations in channel capacity.

The resulting data show how posture-dependent body blockage and multipath propagation influence the simulated THz channel, leading to significant fluctuations in channel capacity. The corresponding simulation outputs include the received power [dBm] and the channel capacity [Gbit/s].
