Listed in Harvard Dataverse
The agency created these estimates to track the levels and types of incomes that are received by the people who live or work in a state.
Description
The agency used the data to provide a framework for analyzing the statistics of individual states as well as showing how state economies compared with each other. Federal and state government agencies used the estimates as a basis for allocating funds and determining matching grants.
They also used the estimates in econometric models, such as those used t o project energy and water use, and to project the effects of taxation and the need for public services. Academic researchers used the estimates for theoretical and applied economic research. Businesses, trade associations, and labor organizations used the estimates for market research.

The series contains quarterly and annual estimates of state personal income. The personal income of a state is the income received by, or on behalf of, the residents of the state. The files provide a detailed, comprehensive economic time series that allow comparisons among states and among industries within a state.
Personal income consists of the income that is received by persons from participation in production, from government and business transfer payments, and from government interest. Income by place of work indicates economic activity of establishments within the state, and income by place of residence indicates current income within a state that is available for spending. The quarterly estimates are released four months after the end of a quarter and are consistent with national quarterly income accounts.
They measure income, and wage and salary disbursements, by major source. Annual estimates are published eight months after the end of the year and measure total and per capita personal income. They include income by major source, wage and salary disbursements by major source, employees by industry, transfer payments by major program; and farm income and expenses.
