For BTPDs, percentages are for entire litters. For GPDs and UPDs, percentages are for single kills. Sample sizes for male killers of each species are in Fig 21.9, with labels of X-axis.

These data are only for litters for which I new kinship or lack of kinship. I have excluded cases of NO DATA for which I could not determine if any kinship occurred between the male killer and the mother of his victims. Excluded cases are N = 9 for GPDs, and N = 2 for UPDs. "No known kinship" means that I could not detect any kinship going back 2-3 generations.

In cases of 'No known kinship," I estimate that r <= 0.0156. Note that numbers in this EXCEL file here are PERCENTAGES. These data used for Fig 21.9 in Hoogland 2026.

This file ready for longterm storage on 17 April 2025. I considered data from the same prairie dog in different years to be independent. Resident male = male that lived in home territory at time when juvenile was killed = Resmale Invader male = male that did NOT live in home territory at time when juvenile was killed; Invader lived in a different territory.

Data for BTPDs and UPDs are from single study-colonies, but data from GPDs are from three study-areas in three different colonies described below, Details of the BTPD and UPD study-colonies and details of the GPD study areas are in Chapters 4, 11, and 21. I observed no infanticides by either sex for WTPDs--so I have not shown WTPDs in Fig 21.8 or Fig 21.9. The percentages of male killers in this figure are SUMMARIES of data from different sources.

I cannot find the Raw Data summaries that I used for Fig 21, but I checked all summaries for this EXCEL file TWO TIMES. A juvenile prairie dog was still unweaned in its natal nursery-burrow, or first emerged from the natal nursery-burrow ≤6 months before the time of killing. GPD Redondo Meadow colony (studied in 2013 through 2018) was within Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) in New Mexico.

GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP. GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. Two of the percentages of BTPD killers in this EXCEL file and Fig 21.9 are 0% (0/39).

One of the percentages of GPD killers in in this EXCEL file and Fig 21.9 is 0% (0/20). I show a small bar for these percentages of 0% to indicate that I looked for such killings by BTPD and GPD males, but observed none. Male killers were sometimes fathers of their victims, and other times were kin such as maternal or paternal half-siblings or full- or half-uncles or full- or half-first cousins with their victims.

In cases of no known kinship, any unknown kinship was almost certainly ≤0.0625. Filename: Fig 21.9, BGU, Kinship between infanticidal males and mothers of their victims, 28 July 2026
