Sampling 3 sampling bouts per year (spring, summer, fall) Number of samples dependent on water body type (streams or rivers/lakes) and microalgae type (periphyton or seston/phytoplankton) Periphyton (biofilm) samples collected from streams across two habitat/substrate types (e.g., riffles, runs, pools; rocks, wood, plants, sand, stilt).

Five biofilm samples taken from dominant habitat type Three biofilm samples taken from subdominant habitat type Periphyton (biofilm) samples collected from rivers/lakes across 3 randomly selected sections Five biofilm samples taken from dominant habitat type Seston (water column) samples collected from streams near the S2 sensor One to four water column samples taken Discontinued in 2018 Phytoplankton (water column) samples collected from rivers/lakes near the buoy and two other locations Three water column samples taken 2024-current, samples within each of the collection types above are combined into a single composite sample prior to processing
