CMOS Image Dataset of ²⁴¹Am Alpha-Particle Detection for Weighted Centroid Radiation Source Localization

Listed in ScienceDB

This dataset contains raw image sequences acquired from a SONY MT9P031 Active Pixel Sensor (APS) exposed to an ²⁴¹Am alpha radiation source under controlled experimental conditions.

Description

The data were collected to support the development and validation of a weighted centroid localization algorithm for non-contact, high-sensitivity alpha-particle detection and tracking. Sensor Configuration:The dataset was captured using a CMOS active pixel sensor with a pixel size of 2.2 µm × 2.2 µm and a native resolution of 2592 × 1944 pixels, providing an active sensing area of 6 mm (H) × 4 mm (V).

The sensor gain was fixed at 50 dB with an integration time of 45 ms, and the protective glass cover was removed to enable direct alpha-particle penetration into the silicon pixel array. Image data were transmitted via a high-speed USB interface at a sampling frequency of 25 Hz. Radiation Source and Collimation: A ²⁴¹Am alpha source with a diameter of 2.13 mm, characteristic alpha-ray energy of 5485.56 keV, and radioactivity of 29 kBq was employed.

A collimating structure with a circular aperture of 0.7 mm diameter and 1 mm length was used to produce a collimated alpha-ray beam, reducing the surface flux rate from 1.05 × 10⁴ cm⁻²s⁻¹ (without collimator) to 5.87 × 10³ cm⁻²s⁻¹ (with collimator). All experiments were conducted at room temperature (25 °C). Dataset Composition: The dataset comprises two categories of experiments:Static Source Localization Experiments: A total of 2600 image frames are collected under two experimental schemes with different initial coordinates and displacement configurations (horizontal and vertical), to evaluate the positioning accuracy and stability under static irradiation conditions.Moving Source Tracking Experiments: Two directional displacement paths (horizontal and vertical) are designed.

Each trial acquires 1000 consecutive image frames. The radiation source performs translational motion at a constant velocity of 1 mm/s with a fixed height of 6 mm above the sensor surface.
