Terrestrial Orbit-Spin Coupling Torques (1860-2040)

The files archived here comprise the underlying data for the paper “Orbit-spin coupling and multiyear droughts of the Western USA: Improving lead times for weather and climate prediction.” A draft version of this paper may be accessed at: arxiv.org/abs/2112.02186. The orbit-spin coupling mechanism (described in the above manuscript and in the listed references) intermittently adds momentum to atmospheric motions in irregular pulses.

The data archived here gives the source function for the accelerations, at 2-hr time intervals, for the period 1860-2040. The calculated accelerations may be incorporated within numerical Earth System models and GCMs, with the goal of improving the agreement between numerical modeling outcomes and atmospheric observations in the time domain. Prior numerical modeling investigations have enabled successful years-in-advance forecasting of planetary scale weather and climate anomalies on Mars (Mischna & Shirley 2017: Planetary & Space Science 141, 45-72; Shirley et al., Icarus 317, 192-208: doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2018.07.024).
