Early Feeding Practices, Growth Outcomes, and Baseline Characteristics in Children with Congenital Heart Disease (N=951)

<p dir="ltr">This dataset comprises clinical characteristics, infant feeding practices, and somatic growth outcomes from 951 pediatric patients aged 0–5 years with congenital heart disease (CHD), consecutively enrolled at Hunan Children's Hospital between March 2018 and August 2022 (Ethics Approval: XYGW-2018-07).
Description
Eligible participants had confirmed CHD diagnoses via echocardiography or cardiac catheterization and complete baseline anthropometric and feeding data obtained prior to corrective cardiac surgery.
Patients were strictly excluded if they had a history of previous cardiac or major gastrointestinal surgery, systemic or hospital-acquired infections, use of antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, or immunosuppressants within the preceding 4 weeks, syndromic CHD with chromosomal abnormalities, or severe comorbid non-cardiac malformations.</p><p dir="ltr">Infant feeding patterns within the first 6 months of life were classified according to World Health Organization (WHO) definitions into exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), mixed feeding (MF), and formula feeding (FF).

Anthropometric parameters (weight and length/height) measured with calibrated equipment were standardized into Weight-for-Age (WAZ), Length/Height-for-Age (HAZ), and Weight-for-Height (WHZ) Z-scores using WHO Anthro software based on the WHO Child Growth Standards, with growth failure phenotypes defined by a clinical threshold of Z-score < -2 (underweight, stunting, and wasting). Complete variable names, measurement units, data types, missing value rules, and categorical coding definitions are documented in the accompanying data dictionary file (variable_metadata.csv).
