1/16° Western Pacific Ocean State Estimate (WPOSE16)

Listed in ScienceDB

WPOSE16 is a 1/16° observation-constrained ocean state estimate for the western Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas, developed using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm) and its adjoint-based data-assimilation system.

Description

The model domain spans 98.5°E–147.5°E and 17°S–35.5°N on a 784 × 840 horizontal grid with 70 vertical levels extending to 6000 m. Initial and open-boundary conditions were derived from GLORYS12V1, atmospheric forcing was obtained from ERA5, and assimilated observations include OSTIA sea surface temperature, SMOS sea surface salinity, satellite sea level anomaly, CODC temperature–salinity profiles, and IAP gridded temperature and salinity.WPOSE16 v1.0 comprises 240 monthly NetCDF-4 files covering January 2005–December 2024, named wpose16_monthly_YYYYMM.nc, together with a companion static-grid file, WPOSE16_grid.nc.

Each monthly file contains potential temperature, practical salinity, eastward, northward, and upward velocities, and sea surface height. Monthly fields were calculated as equally weighted averages of complete daily records. The static-grid file provides bathymetry, cell area, wet mask, partial-cell fraction, and actual layer thickness required for area, volume, and transport calculations.

The complete monthly dataset occupies approximately 81.3 GB (75.7 GiB).The files comply with CF-1.10 and ACDD-1.3 metadata conventions. Land and below-seabed cells are represented by fill values, and an additional fixed quality-control mask is applied only to sea surface height in the southeastern boundary region. Sea surface height represents the MITgcm free-surface displacement relative to the zero level imposed at the beginning of each independent three-month assimilation window; it is therefore not referenced to a geoid or absolute mean sea level and should not be used directly to infer long-term absolute sea-level trends.

The released monthly WPOSE16 v1.0 product is intended primarily for analyses of the mean ocean state and seasonal-to-interannual variability.
