Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change: A Bibliometric Review of Climate-Smart Agriculture, Identifying Opportunities and Challenges

Global climate change puts pressure on agricultural systems, which, in turn, contribute to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) aims to address the dual challenges by enhancing productivity, resilience, and GHG reduction. This review provides a bibliometric analysis of CSA research trends from 2013 to 2023, based on 997 documents from the Web of Science, using CiteSpace and VOSviewer.
It covers publication trends, subject categories, journals, authors, affiliations, and geographic distributions. Additionally, detailed analyses of keywords, clusters, and citation bursts were performed to identify research hotspots and future research directions. The findings indicate that rapid growth in CSA research since 2018, with Environmental Sciences as the leading category.The fundamental knowledge of CSA research encompasses economics, politics, plant, ecology and zoology.

Early studies focused on CSA frameworks, while recent research emphasizes resource efficiency, soil health, and methane emissions. By identifying critical insights into development and key areas for future research, this analysis provides a foundational understanding essential for advancing CSA practices to effectively address the intricate challenges posed by climate change in the agricultural sector.
