Capacity Heatmaps Information Model SPD

Listed in spenergynetworks

The " Capacity Heatmaps Information Model SPD " summarises substation capacity, utilisation and constraint status for the 11kV and 33kV networks across the SP Distribution (SPD).

Description

It provides a high‑level indication of where headroom exists for new demand or generation connections and where operational constraints may limit future applications. The dataset includes key information such as substation name, voltage level, geographic coordinates, associated GSP/BSP, demand and generation firm capacities, available capacities, constraint classifications, and recent connection activity.

These data are sourced from the Long Term Development Statement (LTDS) – November 2025, Load Index data tables (2025), and the Submission Preparation for Connection Activity (LTDS Table 6) – May 2026. The information model is delivered as two data tables: one for the SPM licence area and one for the SPD licence area. Disclaimer Whilst all reasonable care has been taken in the preparation of this data, SP Energy Networks does not accept any responsibility or liability for the accuracy or completeness of this data, and is not liable for any loss that may be attributed to the use of this data.

For the avoidance of doubt, this data should not be used for safety critical purposes without the use of appropriate safety checks and services e.g. LineSearchBeforeUDig etc. Please raise any potential issues with the data which you have received via the feedback form available at the Feedback tab above (must be logged in to see this). The Capacity Heatmaps dataset provides a view of available network headroom based on the current connected position at SPEN substations and including LTDS connection activity.

It offers an indicative representation of how capacity is currently allocated across the network, enabling users to identify local areas where headroom exists or where commitments may limit further connections under present conditions. Users should note that demand headroom is also dependent on upstream network capacity, and generation headroom is influenced by voltage‑control constraints on export as well as the type of generation technology, each of which contributes differently to system fault levels.

The data provides an understanding of the existing network position, supporting early-stage assessment of connection opportunities. The data are indicative only; hence must not be used for safety-critical purposes and cannot be used for accurate connection assessments. This dataset should not be interpreted as a forecast of future network capacity.

Users seeking insight into how network headroom may change under future demand and generation scenarios, such as those driven by electrification and net zero targets, should refer to the Network Development Plan's Network Scenario Headroom Report (NDP NSHR). Our NSHR data incorporates Distribution Future Energy Scenarios (DFES) projections to provide a forecast view of future headroom. Neither the Capacity Heatmaps nor the NSHR replaces the formal connections process.

All connection enquiries must be progressed through the appropriate application route, as detailed by SP Energy Networks: spenergynetworks.co.uk/pages/which_type_of_connection.aspx. Data Triage As part of our commitment to enhancing the transparency, and accessibility of the data we share, we publish the results of our Data Triage process. Our Data Triage documentation includes our Risk Assessments; detailing any controls we have implemented to prevent exposure of sensitive information.
