Description

I created this file from SYSTAT file = MCvar, which I created on 04 Nov 1989 I used file = MCvar for Hoogland 1995 (my first book), and assume that I checked it TWO TIMES at creation In this file, Number of MCs = number of sexual partners that elicited at least one mating call Percentage MCs = percentage of sexual partners for whom male gave at least one MC (see also below) I have data from 208 BTPD males from 1979 (first year of good information on MCs for most males) through 1988 Siring of weanlings was determined by a combination of behavioral observations of copulations with electrophoresis of blood samples.

Note well: No information on eartags or Nyanzol markers in this file. MC = Mating Call, defined in Chapter 16. BTPD male age = age in years since first emergence from natal nursery burrow For this file, Age = 1 = yearling, and Age = 2 = male of age >=2 = 2,3,4,5, or 6 years old So, for this file I have only two classes: 1 and >=2.

Read the rest (9 more)

Sexual partners = number of different females with whom male copulated during mating season Weanlings sired = number of weanlings sired by male on same line Weanling = juvenile offspring at first emergence from natal burrow-entrance Male body mass in autumn = body mass in previous autumn (details in other files) Male body mass during mating season = body mass just before, during, or just after mating season, which for BTPDs usually started in mid-to late February and continued until mid-March Male body mass at 1st juvenile emergences = body mass just before, during, or just after period of first appearance of weanlings in May or June For year, 79 = 1979, 81 = 1981, 85 = 1985, etc.

I considered data from the same BTPD male in different years to be independent. Notice that this file includes data from BOTH yearling BTPD males (1-year olds) AND >=2-year old BTPD males-- even though yearling BTPD males usually did not copulate. However, all the yearling BTPD males in this EXCEL file DID copulate.

Body masses are all in GRAMS All data in this EXCEL file are from sexually mature males that copulated with at least one female. ARS = Annual Reproductive Success These data used for Fig 16.6, 16.8, and Fig 16.10 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 22 March 2025.

Each line = information from one BTPD male for one year. IMPORTANT NOTE: On 26 May 2026, I notice that many of entries for "Percentage MCs" (Column-I) are slightly incorrect. Percentage MCs SHOULD BE the Number of sexual partners that elicited at least one MC divided by the number of sexual partners.

Most of entries in this BTPD EXCEL file are correct or within 10%, and I used this file for the creation of Fig 16.8 for BTPDs. All cases of 0.33 are entered as 0.4, for example. No idea why.

I do not know how these small mistakes happened, and Prairie dogs: Ecology and Social Behavior is already published on 26 May 2026. So, here is what I do: On 26 May 2026, I correct all the data in this EXCEL file, and re-analyze the BTPD data for Fig 16.8 in Hoogland 2026 (page 309). In the new analysis, the X-values are highly similar--identical in most cases-- and the new P-value is P = 0.007 rather than P = 0.002.

So, the graph for Fig 16.8 for BTPDs in Hoogland 2026 (page 309), is slightly inaccurate, but the overall conclusion is still correct. See text in Hoogland 2026, page 308. And the revised graph with the corrections (not shown) looks almost exactly the same as Fig 16.8 for BTPDs in Hoogland 2026.

The BTPD data in this EXCEL file are the same data I used for Fig 16.8 for BTPDs in Hoogland 2026. The data in the corrected file are almost identical, and I do not show them here. In this file, Number of MCs (not shown) = number of sexual partners for which male gave at least one MC, and PercentMCs - the number of sexual partners for which male gave at least one MC divided by the number of sexual partners.

In this file, Percent MCs are shown as PROPORTIONS rather than percentages. Figs 16.6, 16.8, and 16.10 all show PERCENTAGES. File name = Fig 16.6, 16.8, 16.10, BTPDs, Mating calls vs individual variation, sexual partners, and male body mass, 26 May 2026
